Hugo’s road back from IVDD

Dachshund · IVDD rehabilitation

Hugo the dachshund resting on a treatment mat

Hugo came to me to begin his rehabilitation after a diagnosis of intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), which is unfortunately common in long-backed breeds like dachshunds.

He received a percutaneous intradiscal chondroitinase injection at Cambridge Specialist Referrals, an exciting newer treatment that uses an enzyme to break down part of the affected disc and reduce pressure on the spinal cord. At eight weeks after his injection he was making lovely progress, though still a little wobbly through his hind legs.

Our goals:

  • Encourage sensory input and body awareness through the hind legs with tactile stimulation.
  • Gradually strengthen the hind legs and core.
  • Improve stability, coordination and confidence when moving.
  • Build strength step by step, always appropriate for his stage of recovery.

Hugo is already showing some really positive signs. Go Hugo!
